How can a composer, with all the tools he has at his disposal, take an interpretive view of the work of another-a fortiori when it is a masterpiece of the Schubert’s winter travel magnitude? This is the challenge that Hans Zender faced. The German composer was not content to add orchestral colors to the Schubertian piano. He gave himself a contemporary re-reading of the lieder cycle to reinvent it in a new and yet familiar light. An approach that the composer describes as “creative transformation” so that “the whole cycle is more like an adventurous hike than a walk.”
