Free spirit and iconoclast, Frank Zappa is a legend in the history of rock. What is less well known is that this revolutionary musician has also been nourished by composers such as Igor Stravinsky, Anton Webern and Edgard Varèse, whom he considers at the age of twenty to be “the greatest living composer”. Throughout his career, Zappa has dreamed of experimenting his musical ideas with a set of contemporary music. Pierre Boulez fulfilled this dream in 1984, with an order for the EIC, The Perfect Stranger, which will result in the recording of a record. He will continue the adventure with the Ensemble Modern for the album The Yellow Shark in 1993. The striking spirit of Zappa, which transcends genres and styles, is “reincarnated” today in personalities like John Zorn, from jazz and whose work defies any academic classification or Bernhard Gander, deeply influenced by the music rock, hard rock and metal he practiced in his youth. The EIC is back on these explosive exchanges, as part of the Zappa Weekend organized by the Philharmonie de Paris.
